Robert Gurny, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, where he was the Head of the Department and President of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Geneva.
Professor Gurny is one of the pioneers in the field of drug delivery. He is the author of more than 370 peer-reviewed articles, several books, more than 200 abstracts of presentations at international meetings. He also is the author or co-author of 48 patents.
Dr Gurny’s research interests include:
- Design of new carrier systems for dermal, intraocular and subretinal drug delivery of drugs
- Drug carriers and drug targeting for loco-regional delivery
- Developing new degradable biopolymers, long acting implants
- Formulation of proteins and peptides
Professor Gurny’s research has been recognized by several prestigious awards such as the Merck Award in 1994, the Award of the International Association for Pharmaceutical Technology in 1995, the Phoenix Award in 1996, the Roger Barré Award from the University of Montreal in 1999¸ the Award of the Swiss Society of Industrial Pharmacy in 2010, the Wichtig Award of the European Association of Artificial Organs in 2011, the Maurice Janot Award in 2012 and the BioAlps Award in 2016.
He is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Fellow of the American Association of Biomaterials, Fellow of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has served for over 10 years as the General Secretary of the “Controlled Release Society”, was Vice President of the International Association of Pharmaceutical Technology and was Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics until recently. He also has served for numerous years on the board of the European Pharmacopeia in Strasbourg. He is member of the advisory board of numerous pharmaceutical companies and co-founder of a startup company located in Geneva, Switzerland.
